The Indoor Half of the System
The evaporator coil sits inside the air handler or furnace and is where the actual cooling happens - warm indoor air passes over refrigerant-filled coils and comes out the other side cold and dehumidified. It's also a component prone to slow refrigerant leaks, corrosion, and freezing over from restricted airflow, and when it fails, the symptoms often look like general "AC not cooling" problems rather than pointing clearly to the coil itself. For homeowners in Glocester, RI whose outdoor condenser is still functioning well, evaporator coil replacement is a targeted repair rather than a reason to replace the whole system outright.
Diagnosing Before Replacing
Coil problems get correctly identified through a specific process, not guesswork based on a single symptom:
- Refrigerant pressure testing to confirm whether a leak is present and, where possible, where it's located
- Visual inspection for corrosion, ice buildup, or physical coil damage
- Airflow assessment, since restricted airflow from a dirty filter or undersized return can mimic coil failure symptoms closely
- Compatibility check against the existing condenser before ordering a replacement coil, since coils are matched to tonnage and refrigerant type just like condensers are matched
Coils on systems older than ten to twelve years, especially those still running R-22 refrigerant, are worth evaluating against full system replacement cost - sourcing a compatible R-22 coil has become increasingly expensive as the refrigerant is phased out of production nationwide.
What to Expect From the Replacement
Evaporator coil replacement typically takes a matter of hours rather than a full day, since it doesn't involve outdoor equipment, electrical panel work, or ductwork changes. The refrigerant circuit is evacuated, the old coil removed, the new coil installed and connected, and the system recharged to manufacturer spec before final testing confirms proper operation. Warranty coverage on replacement coils varies by manufacturer and original system age, which is confirmed as part of the estimate before any work begins, not discovered afterward.
